HLOM Guest Speaker Series: Stephen Tulowiecki, “”The Letchworth State Park Atlas: A Fresh Look at America’s Favorite State Park”

Thursday, August 24, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us at the Holland Land Office Museum for the next edition of our Guest Speaker Series on Thursday, August 24 at 7 pm. Stephen Tulowiecki will be presenting, “The Letchworth State Park Atlas: A Fresh Look at America’s Favorite State Park”.
“With thundering waterfalls, towering cliffs, and vibrant autumn foliage, Letchworth State Park is one of the most scenically spectacular parks in the eastern United States, attracting one million visitors per year. Modern tourists visit the park primarily to appreciate its scenery. However, the park has a long, complex, and sometimes contentious environmental and human history that spans back to Native American settlement. Stephen J. Tulowiecki, Associate Professor of Geography at SUNY Geneseo, will discuss the creation of his recently-published The Letchworth State Park Atlas, shining new light on the nature, history, and tourism of the park. He will discuss aspects of the park’s geology, ecological communities, Native American settlement, nineteenth-century settlement, tourist origins, and beyond. Copies of his atlas will be available for purchase.”
Stephen J. Tulowiecki is an Associate Professor of Geography at The State University of New York at Geneseo. He teaches courses in Geographic Information Systems, and his research studies forests of the eastern United States. An avid hiker, he currently resides in Caledonia, New York (25 minutes from Letchworth State Park) with his wife Grace, son Jonah, and daughter Vera.
“This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrant Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by GO ART!”
