Java with Joe E.: Tyler Angora, “Victorian Era Mourning”
Museum Curator Tyler Angora presented as part of the HLOM Java with Joe E. series. His topic, “Victorian Era Mourning,” detailed the history of the ceremonies and traditions that developed during the 19th century revolving around death and mourning, and how rigid a system that was. He also laid out the differences between mourning then and today with the help of artifacts from the museum.

Java with Joe E.: Charlie Boyd & Bernida Scoins, “John C. Gardner”
The Holland Land Office Museum welcomed Charles Boyd and Batavia Town Historian Bernida Scoins for our latest Java with Joe E. presentation. They shared the life and works of Genesee County’s most famous author, John C. Gardner, who grew up in Bethany and graduated from Batavia High School. We were even joined by special guest James Gardner, John’s brother. Gardner wrote a large number of published works from the 1960s to the 1980s while working as an professor in Old English Literature and Fiction Writing. John C. Gardner died in 1982 in a motorcycle accident.

The Holland Land Office Museum welcomed for its latest Java with Joe E. presenter, Jason Smith, Superintendent of Batavia City Schools. He shared the life and impact of Superintendent John Kennedy, who ran Batavia Schools over 100 years ago, and became famous for his “Batavia System”.

The Holland Land Office Museum welcomed for its latest Java with Joe E. presenter, Dr. Michael Eula, the Genesee County Historian, as he shared excerpts from his upcoming manuscript on the history of Genesee County. His new presentation, “The National is Local: Essays of Genesee County History” details the eras of national history and how they affected the local population of Genesee County. One excerpt he shares relates to the Cold War and its affects locally.
