Did you know that another man by the name of William Wells Brown, one with local connections to Buffalo, followed a very similar trajectory to Douglass- an escaped slave turned author and orator. Today, Brown may not be as recognizable, but in the 1840s he was one of the major players in the abolitionist movement- attaining enough fame to form both a friendship and rivalry with Frederick Douglass.
