Richard Beatty will be presenting on “Dr. Seuss Goes to War.” In conjunction with the new exhibit at HLOM\, Richard Beatty will present a look back at Dr. Seuss’s virtually unknown WWII era political cartoons. Author Richard H Minear\, now retired Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst\, discovered that there existed 400 drawings that ultimately became the subject matter for his 1999 book\, Dr. Seuss Goes to War\, the World War II Editorial Cartoons of Theodor Seuss Geisel”. Come and hear about Seuss’s contribution to the war effort years before his name became famous for his wildly popular children’s books. Vic Vignola will be presenting on his book “Contrast in Command: The Battle of Fair Oaks\, May 31-June 1\, 1862.” His presentation describes the golden opportunity McClellan presented Confederate leadership at Seven Pines/Fair Oaks on May 31\, 1862. A day\, which developed into one of contrasts regarding leadership and command decisions made by Johnston\, Sumner\, and others. Award winning author/historian Victor Vignola is a lifelong student of the Civil War. His first book Contrasts in Command: The Battle of Fair Oaks – May 31 – June 1\, 1862. He has also authored magazine articles for the American Civil War\, and North and South publications. Vic conducts Civil War history programs and conducts tours of various sites. DESCRIPTION:The Holland Land Office Museum will be hosting a Military Encampment & Timeline event on Saturday\, June 14th from 10 am to 2 pm. The event will take place on the museum grounds and inside the museum located at 131 W. Main Street\, Batavia\, NY 14020. The event will feature reenactors dress in military gear from the Revolutionary War to the current eras. The encampment will feature real uniformed reenactors\, military weapons\, gear and vehicles. The event coincides with the regular exhibits at the museum including military exhibits and a new featured exhibit\, “World War II on the Homefront: Propaganda and Rationing.” The event is available with museum admission: $5 for adults\, $3 for seniors/students/veterans\, $1 for children\, and $10 for a family of four. Kevin Pawlak will be presenting on his book “John Brown’s Raid: Harpers Ferry and the Coming of the Civil War\, October 16-18\, 1859.” “John Brown’s Raid” tells the story of the first shots that led to disunion. Richly filled with maps and images\, it includes a driving and walking tour of sites related to Brown’s Raid so visitors today can follow the path of America’s meteor.” Admission is $5 or $3 for museum members. SUMMARY:Guest Speaker Series: Randy John\, "The Seneca in the Revolutionary War"
DESCRIPTION:The Holland Land Office is proud to announce the next presenter in our Guest Speaker Series on Thursday\, September 18th at 7 pm. Randy John\, Ph.D.\, will be presenting on his newest book\, “The Seneca in the American Revolution. This book surveys the literature on the American Revolution and provides the story of the Onöndowa’ga:’ (Seneca Nation) in the American Revolution. The ‘Seneca version’ of the American Revolution is included based on Governor Blacksnake’s account. In 1850\, Lyman Draper interviewed Blacksnake on the Allegany Territory. Draper became a librarian and Secretary for the State Historical Society of Wisconsin from 1854 to 1886. Blacksnake’s first-hand stories recorded by Draper are preserved at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison\, Wisconsin. Copies of the book will be given to those in attendance. DESCRIPTION:Back this year is our Downtown Batavia Ghost Walk on Fridays in October. The walks led by Connie Boyd will occur on October 3 and 17 at 7:00 and 7:30 pm. The walks will begin and end at GO ART! located at 201 E. Main St. in Batavia.  Walk through Downtown Batavia and hear tales of spiritualists\, psychics\, buried bones\, and many colorful characters that reside in the city’s heart. You will even get to know more of Batavia’s Madame\, Edna Gruber. Admission is $15.00 or $10.00 for museum members and reservations are required with purchase. Museum members will receive a promo code for discount tickets. Tours are limited to 25 people each. The tour begins and ends at GO ART! and is approximately 1 1/2 to two hours long.
