"The old Land Office is a common reminder of all the grandfathers and great grandfathers of Western New York.  Their frequent pilgrimages to the Land office was a feature of their lives,  They viewed again and again it's sturdy walls; they stepped in and out again overs it's threshold that they found in the center of all of their interests, the topic of much of their discourse.  It was to them a social, religious and political headquarters, while they felled the trees and let the sunlight down through the woods to invite production in the fertile soil."  --John Kennedy, 19th century scholar

Something Old, something new
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

Treasured Wedding Memories
A new annual exhibit at the HLOM

Each item in this poem represents a good-luck token for the bride.  If she carries all of them on her wedding day, her marriage will be happy.

"Something old" symbolized continuity with the bride's family and the past.  "Something new" meant optimism and hope for the bride's new life ahead.  "Something borrowed" is an item from a happily married friend, whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride.  The color blue was connected to weddings for centuries.

And finally, a silver sixpence in the bride's shoe represented wealth and financial security.

Learn more about weddings as you view gowns on display in the East wing of the museum.  Gowns on display range from the Civil War era to the 1970s.

Treasured Wedding Memories exhibit runs til June 1st.
